A fun-filled weekend....

This past weekend was our 2nd annual Kayak Challenge and Festival, the weather was beautiful and everyone had a great time, Kayakers came from far and wide to be involved in this and a good time was had by all. Here a group of Kayakers preparing for their event, our Mayor is amongst them, all rested and ready to 'paddle'!!

On Sunday, to finish the festival of fun, the annual 'Duck Race' took place ...each duck was $5.00 and the proceeds went to the local Alzheimer Society of Timmins, And of course, if your duck was the first, second or third over the finish line, you won either $2000., $1000. or $500.
It was a fun event..here a group of people threw the ducks off the bridge and the race began.

This was cute, a female Mallard got in the race too, she couldn't figure out who all these yellow friends were or where they were going...

There was a soft breeze which did help with the current of the river, although it did take an hour and a half before the winners were announced. I think that is mine in the left corner, going the other way, I didn't win anyway!! :)
We didn't see the end of the race as we did have to leave early, but was neat to see...and look forward to entering again next year!!

Mystery Solved....

Back on July 21, I posted a few pics of this breed of horse, from a local farm in the area. This past weekend, we had Kayak races and festival here in town, and they also had fun stuff for the younger crowd such as face painting, a few rides and of course, horse rides. Recognizing the horses as that same breed, (they are not from the same farm though) I asked the owner, what type of breed they are. I was pleased to find out they are called Norwegian Fjord's. They are a small but very strong breed originating in Norway. They are definitely a beautiful horse!!

It's coming...

After a fabulous summer here in Northern Ontario, fall is starting to creep in...
I, for one, won't miss the humidity... and look forward to the 'colors' of fall....;)

A Mallard waiting for corn...

Took a walk at Gilles Lake tonite, it was a beautiful evening, there are many ducks here and people feed them corn and bread etc. They actually become quite comfortable with people around all the time, and it is great for the kids to get close to nature. Taken just before dusk..

A cloudy morning...

In Nova Scotia, still going through my holiday pictures...

This is probably one of my favorite pic of the whole trip, I have many favorites, but there is just something about this one, the stillness, the reflection..

Having a quick lunch...

Caught this calf having lunch, he had tried to catch up to mom as she wandered around the field, and, I guess, decided to get it while he could ! Done in Sepia...

A few Northern Flying Squirrels...

If you recall from last summer, I mentioned feeding the 'Northern Flying Squirrels' at camp,
well, they are back in full force, and know where to get the peanuts, we have 3 or more coming right now, and I love their antics. If you aren't familiar with these fellows, they are nocturnal,
and have a layer of skin down each side, with which they 'glide' from tree to tree, not really flying, but does look like they do.
This is a good shot of the side skin with which they glide..

I am yet to get a shot of them 'gliding' down, but I will keep trying, it is on my 'bucket list' ! :)

A toad close up..

Had a little fun with this fellow, he was quite tiny, but full of life !!
He actually jumped straight up at me once, ask me if I 'screamed' !! lol

Antics of a Chipmunk...

'Chippy' loves the peanuts !! He will do just about anything to get them !!
Twists his back... Notice how he is holding on by 'one claw'...lol

And with mouth full, he is off to store for the winter ..

Northern (Yellow-shafted) Flicker..

While making supper, glanced out the window and to my delight, seen this fellow (a male) pecking in my backyard, first one I have seen this year... This pic shows the yellow near the tail best...there is a red-shafted one also, who have the red on the underside.

Hummer today...

He is a little more comfortable with me today...but still keeping an eye on me !! This is a male, not the same one as yesterday but both were around the feeder today again ! Will post more holiday pics next week...:)
